Of course if all you want to do is LOWER a large part of the low end, use a shelf. If you wish to CUT the lows out altogether, use a LOW CUT, which, confusingly is also called HIGH PASS. Think of it like this - A LOW CUT cuts the lows; a HIGH PASS lets the highs pass. It's exactly the same thing!

"The instructors are amazing!! I had Scott for most of the course and he's just awesome. I also had Apu and Zack. Everyone was super nice, very helpful, and fun to have as instructors. Really felt like a family. and I'm not sure if this is just because of covid but the fact that the classes are smaller compared to what you'd get at a bigger institution or university is a huge plus in my opinion. I find real value in not just the great teaching style of this school but also how inviting everyone is. Writing this on the last day of the program and I'm already gonna miss everyone. I really appreciate everything the instructors did and you as well Dave. I know it was hard to organize everything during these crazy times. I'm gonna miss the people at Garnish. 4 ways to manipulate the tuning of a kick.

1) Use a drum synthesizer. This will allow you fully tune a kick with just a few clicks.

2) Figure out the pitch or tune of the kick and then drop it into a sampler like Battery or Kontakt and pitch it using the sampler's pitch stretching ability.

3) You can always manipulate the actual sample by making aggressive EQ cuts and boosts, but this could seriously 'effect' (see what I did thar) the impact of the kick that you desire. An in-tune kick that doesn't sound like a kick anymore, is not what you want!

4) Use a Pitch Shifting plugin. This sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. It depends on the kick sample and the quality of the pitch shifter.

Ratio specifies the amount of compression applied

Ratio specifies the amount of compression applied to the signal. This setting is expressed in decibels. For example, a ratio of 2:1 indicates that a signal exceeding the threshold by 2 dB will be attenuated down by 1 dB. A signal exceeding the threshold by 8 dB will be attenuated down by 4 dB, etc. A ratio of 1:1 represents “unity gain” — in other words, no attenuation.

A ratio of around 2:1 is considered slight compression. 4:1 would be considered medium compression. 10:1 starts getting into strong or hard compression, and 20:1 thru ∞:1 (infinity to one) would be considered “limiting” — an effect that can be used to ensure that a signal essentially never exceeds the set threshold.
